Talley’s Folly
by Lanford Wilson
Oak Park Festival Theatre at Austin Gardens, Oak Park – June 13 – July 15, 2007
review by Ed Vincent

Talley’s Folly is gem by itself, having  won the Pulitzer Prize
and other awards in 1980 and Tony nominations
following the Broadway run.  This play shows that the heart and soul of Eugene O'Neill is still alive and doing quite well.  O'Neill is perhaps an icon to the argumentative play genre with lots personnel issues (dramatic realism), and has long been the
test of an actors craft and abilities. This creation by Lanford Wilson is in that same mold.

Wilson was born in the town where the story is based and perhaps knew many of the prejudices that the male lead felt
in that environment.  This is a powerful drama taking place
in one night and the acting is some of the best that
I've had
the pleasure to review.  The growth of character, the transformations, the revelations, the acceptance
of the human condition all make this dramatic realism breath and live.

A grand catharsis of epic proportions
mixed with love and reality.

If like theater, you should come and have a look, if you love theater you must get at least two tickets and get ready for a wonderful time in Austin Gardens.  Maggie Graham, as Sally Talley is charming and delightful, her character grows with
each additional line of well written dialogue.  David Girolmo,
as Matt Friedman fills the role like a handmade glove.
His talents in fencing with accents, persistence, and dedication to
a path of love are praise worthy.

Matt tells
Sally " We're a lot alike, being so different".

This is a play for everyone, the entire family, come and live in the drama for a night of grand entertainment.

"Highly recommended"
